  3. teaching a robot to assist surgeons

teaching a robot to assist surgeons.

Over the past six years, our colleague Bas Vet (senior system engineer) has worked on many different groundbreaking technological solutions. Currently, he is leading an endoscopy automation project, which involves developing a smart robot to automatically control a laparoscope, a surgical camera inserted into the abdominal cavity by means of a minimally invasive procedure. The main challenge the team is facing now is to ensure optimum visibility of the surgical instrument at all times.

The original case was published on our careers website.

challenges of the project

EU certification
for AI projects.

As a systems engineer, Bas Vet has a crucial role to play, ensuring the seamless integration of the various components by overseeing all the engineering disciplines involved. Thanks to Bas Vet's clear vision and close coordination between all involved, the project has gone off without a hitch so far.

"For me, what makes this project so challenging is that we are one of the first teams working on a system in which AI plays a crucial role and which also has to be certified under strict EU standards. Combining advanced AI and machine learning with stringent patient safety and reliability requirements calls for far-reaching documentation, diligent risk management and an accurate data collection process. One of the main challenges of the black box method is to get both medical experts and inspectors to buy into the project and trust the outcome. Nevertheless, I am proud of what we have achieved so far. We have managed to keep the project on schedule and on budget thanks to our thoughtful draft design, much to our customer's delight."

joint goal

bringing a revolutionary product to market.

What I like most about this project is that it gives me the chance to work with professionals from many different fields - from AI and Machine Learning to Human Factors, Quality Assurance and Software Development. Our wide-ranging in-house expertise means that we can approach challenges from a variety of perspectives to bolster innovation and add value for our customers. In the end, we are all moving in the same direction and pursuing the same goal: bringing a revolutionary product to market. We have already conducted impressive user tests on a realistic mannequin in a series of true-to-life simulations. I cannot wait to run follow-up tests in a hospital environment and keep tweaking the system.’

this is what makes soccer such an interesting sport!

In our previous post, we predicted that PSV wouldn’t advance based on early results and the remaining schedule. Luckily, we were wrong! With two great wins over Liverpool and Red Star, PSV secured 15th place and moved to the next round. Now we’ll analyze our initial predictions, compare them to the final outcomes, and forecast the full competition ranking and what to expect next.

patient ventilator asynchrony in respiratory support.

Critically ill patients who are unable to breathe (sufficiently) on their own receive respiratory support. It is essential that this support is synchronized (in time) with the patient’s spontaneous breaths.
